Stephanie Brandenburg of Frond Design Studio

Stephanie Brandenburg

We sat down with Stephanie last month and asked her a few questions. Her answers were so genuine and down-to-earth, we just had to share them with you.

  1. Where were you born?
Cedar Rapids, IA - Mercy Hospital
  2. How did you grow up (i.e. in a city, on a farm, raised by wolves)?
I had a beautiful childhood with a big family. My childhood was full of dandelions, baby birds, kickball and sunshine. I am the older sister of three brothers. So when we all get together it is great.
  3. When did you first know you wanted to be an artist?
You know, I became an artist by accident. I was doing floral design and merchandising at my mom's store, Fern Hill. One day I took some little vases home and painted on them. I sold them through her store for $9.95 each. I was thrilled. I was so honored by the fact that someone would connect with this little creation and actually pay something for it. By this time I had three daughters and decided this would be a lovely way to be able to work at home with my girls so many days when I wasn't working at Fern Hill, I could paint on architectural antiques and sell them for extra income.
  4. Do you have any professional art training or are you self taught?
I am self taught. I have a BA in History because I wanted to be an attorney. But I took an Art History class and was hooked. I decided I wanted to do that so I began looking at different styles of art and artists. So then that empowered me to find my voice, my style.
  5. What inspires you?
I am inspired primarily by my children I have three girls and a boy. But I find inspiration all around me. I am really touched by old books, ephemera of old seed packets or catalogues.
  6. How/Why did you come up with the concept for Frond?
Frond Design Studios began as a commitment to Art in Fabric. I had designed for years and been on the road at the shows with my mom's store, Fern Hill. When I thought about our Art Fabric not being out there anymore I was just sad for the industry. It would truly be a loss not to have this kind of open creativity. I had been designing for another company and they wanted to focus on licensing, like Marvel comics etc.  I wanted to continue the art movement I had started long ago. I felt like a puzzle piece that didn't fit. An investor helped me get started and the rest is history.
  7. What is you mission statement?
Frond Design Studios is trademarked with the tag line Running With Fabric. Our mission is to free sewers and creatives to tap into their creative side, to see fabric in a different way. To literally put art into fabric. When you look at Frond Fabrics and you hold them up to the paintings from which they were born it is virtually identical. That is what we strive for everyday. That is our message: Art in Fabric.
  8. What is your vision for Frond’s future?
Ideally I would love to see Frond Design Studios grow. My dream is to print ALL of the lines that are in our heads and the heads of future artists. When we go on the road, our message resonates with the sewer. They usually stop in their tracks, some are brought to tears. Our work is different. But it is different because our souls are in the work. It is authentic. It is real.

The Frond and Sulky Partnership Begins

When we discovered Stephanie’s fabrics, we decided to use it in our Sulky Certified Teacher projects. We also used them as the inspiration for our entire Quilt Market booth last year. While there, we approached Stephanie about partnering with Sulky. After a few meetings and brainstorming sessions, we formed a wonderful friendship which has resulted in three spectacular FREE quilt patterns with coordinating thread collections. Simply stunning!
