Thread Sketched Quilted Indian - Fabric

    Preparing the Background and Borders:
  1. Sew the 1-1/2" gray borders to the top, bottom, and left side of the 19" x 25" sky fabric. Set aside.

  2. With the 4" x 27" piece of totally Stable shiney side up, center the 2-1/2" equilateral fabric triangle at the bottom of it. Iron or pin in place. Do not touch your iron to the shiny side of the Totally Stable - iron fabric only.
  3. Place the first strip of your choice (I went from darks to lights to sky) onto the right side of the triangle and stitch them together.

  4. Fold the strip down and finger press the seam.
  5. Place the second strip on the left side of the triangle and stitch them together. Fold the strip down and finger press the seam.

  6. Continue piecing this in a herringbone fashion until the 4" x 27" piece of Totally Stable is covered. Trim the pieced strip even with the tearaway backing. Stay stitch along the edges. Sew this border piece onto the right side of the background sky fabric.

Preparing the Solvy Overlay Design Pattern:
  1. Place the 18" x 22" piece of Sulky Solvy on the Indian pattern. Tape the piece in the corners to keep it from shifting, or use Sulky KK 2000 Temporary Spray Adhesive sprayed lightly on the fabric to hold the pattern in place.
  2. With an fine-line, permanent-ink marker, trace the design onto the 18" x 22" piece of Solvy. Right-handers, start in the top left corner and work across. Left-handers, begin in the right corner. This will keep your hand from smearing the design. It is easy to invert the indian design to face either left or right - the choice is yours. You will want to use this same technique when thread-sketch quilting a vest which requires a mirror image of a design so the design faces in toward the center. With Sulky Solvy, all you have to do is turn it over to achieve a mirror image. It's fantastic!

    Layering for "Thread Sketch Quilting":
  1. Tape the backing fabric (right-side down) onto a table, making sure the fabric is smooth and taut. Spray lightly with Sulky KK 2000 Temporary Spray Adhesive.
  2. Place the batting and then the pieced project (right-side up) on top of the backing fabric, making sure they are smooth, again using the KK 2000 to hold the layers together.
  3. Lightly spray the quilt top with KK 2000 and position the Solvy. Remove the commas after "Solvy" and after "traced design". Position the Solvy, with the traced design, on top of the pieced project.
  4. Only a few safety pins will be needed when Sulky KK 2000 Temporary Spray Adhesive is used to hold the layers together while quilting.
