Show #403-? - Joyce Drexler Joyce Drexler, Co-Founder and Creative Director for Sulky of America, and Pokey Bolton, host of Quilting Arts TV, show some of the project samples that Joyce brought to the show. Joyce introduces a twist to the ever-popular wrapped-cord technique. Using clothesline, Joyce shows a square version of the technique that was designed by Nancy Sapin, a Sulky National Educator. She also shows how to make your favorite feature fabric the center of the square. So often you have a fabric that you love but once you wrap it, it doesn't show off the feature that inspired you to buy it. With this square technique you see the fabric clearly. Joyce shows how to make the square base (or rectangular base if you prefer) using Sulky Fuse 'n Stitch Permanent Iron-On Stabilizer to make a smooth finish to the corded center. She then adds one of her beautiful embroideries from her Great Notions Fern Card #3020GNP (available through www.speedstitch.com). Joyce shows you the trick to making a beautiful finished end so that your square shape remains pure. It's quick and easy to make trivets, coasters, placemats, bowls, and more. You can easily make a whole coordinated set to match your dŽcor, or for holidays and birthdays (possibly a set for the special birthday person at the table). It's even fun to do with "manly" fabrics for the men in your life. Joyce shows how to use Sulky Cotton Blendables to enhance the project with beautiful stitching. Show #403-1 - Fabric Manipulation with Carol Ingram Carol Ingram on the set of "Quilting Arts TV" with Pokey Bolton, host and editor-in-chief of Quilting Arts Magazine Carol Ingram, Designer for Sulky of America, shows us how to tame those beautiful, expensive fabrics that make the most delicious pillows and garments. Using Sulky Tender Touch Iron-On Stabilizer that does not change the hand, feel or look of the original fabric, Carol shows us some secrets couture sewers use to control the raveling and fraying of those expensive fabrics and also how to use this anti-ravel technique for garment making as well. Carol created a "scrunched" silk dupioni pillow that is just breathtaking. She shows you how to create the scrunched fabric, stabilize it, and then make it into elegant pillows. She also shares a hand knit "fabric" which she accented with silk dupioni piping and borders. Knitters beware - you will be addicted! There are ruched pillows, serger pillows, pleated pillows, braided pillows and more! All these magnificent techniques could easily be converted to elegant wearables too!

Show #309-3 - Fern Finch Embroidered Clothes with Joyce Drexler Joyce shows her Fabulous Jumbo Ferns embroidery collection for Great Notions (#3020GNP). Joyce shows a wonderful appliqué design enhanced by one of her fern embroideries, featured in the book An Updated Supplement to Sulky's Secrets to Successful Stabilizing (#900B-17). Joyce designed an adorable chickadee sitting on a log with the tree fern growing out of the log. She places this design onto a sweatshirt, showing you how to determine placement and how and where to embroider the design. Lots of stabilizer hints for doing layers and embroidering on knits and sweatshirts. How to do "hoopless" embroidery using Sulky Soft 'n Sheer and Sulky KK 2000 Temporary Spray Adhesive. The appliqué is built on a non-stick pressing sheet and moved as a finished unit onto the sweatshirt. Joyce shares her embellishing secrets for raw-edge appliqué, including using Sulky Polyester Invisible in the bobbin for perfect straight-stitch raw-edge appliquŽ. Taking the designs a step further, Joyce shows her beautiful green fern quilt based on the instructions for the quilt in the book, Quick and Easy Weekend Quilting with Sulky (#900B-16). Show #306-3 - Pin Woven Portraits with Carol Ingram Designer Carol Ingram shows how to make a family heirloom using Printer Fabric and Sulky 12 wt. Cotton to pin-weave a family photo. Carol discusses the kind of images to use and the tools that help make this project a success, including Sulky Fuse 'n Stitch Permanent Stabilizer. Carol demonstrates how to weave the vertical threads around the pins to prepare for the actual pin weaving using Sulky 12 wt. Cotton Thread over the Sulky Fuse 'n Stitch. Then, she shows how to actually weave the cut photograph over and under the Cotton Threads.

Show #305-4 - Transfer Pen Fun with Carol Ingram Carol shows viewers how to get more artistic with the Sulky Iron-On Transfer Pens using silk leaves or real leaves as a color guide and as a guide to make a template. Carol shows how to mix colors and do a lot more than simple line drawings with the Iron-On Transfer Pens. A quick-tip segment that will excite and motivate you to take the Sulky Iron-On Transfer Pens to a new level.

Show #205-4 - Stand in the Woods by Joyce Drexler Joyce has a poem that has been hanging on her studio wall for many years, which she shares with us. By typing the poem into her computer with a calligraphy type font, she can then print it off on Printed Treasures printer fabric. She can then insert this fabric into her wallhanging. She thought this would be a great way to memorialize a favorite poem, love letter, song lyrics or any written story that has meaning in your life or a loved one's life. What an amazing graduation or anniversary present that would make! Joyce's love of trees is shown with her large appliquéd and free-motion-stitched tree, created with a pattern of Sulky Super Solvy and a permanent ink marker. Joyce explains how to stabilize your fabric so that you can do the heavy satin-stitching of the tree branches using two layers of Sulky Totally Stable Iron-On Stabilizer on the back of the base fabric. The tree is stitched using Sulky 30 wt. Rayon Thread. Joyce introduces one of Carol Doak's free paper-piecing patterns taken from her website: www.caroldoak.com to use as the bottom accent piece of her tree wallhanging. Joyce ran the copies of the paper pieced pattern off on Sulky Paper Solvy which just dissolves away when the block is complete. No more hours of tearing paper away from the back of your foundation-pieced blocks, and no stress at all on the threads. The grand finale is the beautiful quilting with Sulky Cotton Blendables Thread. Show #203-4 - Fiber Felting by Carol Ingram Carol talks about how to take Sulky Cut-Away Plus Stabilizer and dye it and texture it with rock salt, and then this becomes your background for your fiber artwork. Carol takes dyed wool fibers that are curly and have lots of texture. The wool is then felted in certain areas and then allowed to be free and dimensional in others. Carol then makes pretty free-motion bubbles over her wool fibers using Sulky Threads. Carol then stitches a beautiful dragonfly on Sulky Ultra Solvy using Sulky Metallic Threads and hand beading. When the stabilizer is washed away the gossamer wings of the dragonfly remain. She added pretty sayings to the dyed Cut-Away Plus background by using the Sulky Iron-On Transfer Pens. She copied the sayings from a book of sayings for scrapbooking projects, and traced the words in reverse using the Transfer Pen in one of the 8 great colors available, and then used an appliqué mini-iron to transfer the words to the dyed Cut-Away Plus. Show #109 - Carol Ingram and her dazzling felted bowls... Carol Ingram brings art to felted bowls. Starting with a knitted cat bed for her friend, Patti Lee, she took it to whole other level, as Carol often does. The kitties loved the bed, but simply would not abide by the "rule" of sleeping inside, and instead flopped all over the sides of the bowl, which flattened it. So Carol found that by using Sulky Solvy in liquid form (see recipe below) to spread along the whole inside of the bowl using a foam paint brush which creates a stabilizing effect making the sides nice and firm. Carol demonstrates using a wheelbarrow tire inner tube to shape the bowl while it dries. Then when the wheelbarrow inner tube is deflated, the bowl stands nice and stiff all by itself and retains its shape for a very long time. The liquid Solvy treatment can always be repeated should it become necessary in certain climates. Various types of embellishments are shown on all of the different shapes of bowls, including felted wool, tassels, beading, hand-stitching using Sulky 12 wt. Cotton Threads, and even a bowl that was embellished with Sulky Holoshimmer on the sewing machine. Sulky liquid Solvy recipe: 1 yd. Solvy to 8 oz. of water, or 1/2 yd. of Super Solvy to 8 oz. of water. This is just a guideline, there is no exact rule. Carol actually chops up the Solvy or Super Solvy into "confetti" and mixes it with water to a "runny pudding" consistency for this project. Show #105 - Free-motion Quilting with Joyce Drexler Using sun-dyed fabrics Joyce shows how to do a really simple and fast quilt block that is just repositioned to add interest to the quilt. The sun-dyed fabrics add a contemporary look and serve as a palette and guide for free-motion quilting. By twisting the blocks it gives beautiful motion and flow to the quilt. Joyce also demonstrates basting your quilt with Sulky KK 2000 Temporary Spray Adhesive for no-pin quilting. The leaves that are sun-dyed into the fabrics, become the pattern to follow when you free-motion, and then you can do tiny stipple quilting around the free-motioned leaves within the center of the block. The Sulky Cotton Blendables look so natural on these hand-dyed fabrics and add lots of texture and dimension. The subtle, random color changes of the Sulky Cotton Blendables add a lot of forgiveness to the stippling stitch (some of us need more forgiveness than others). Quick tips about getting your quilting designs onto your quilt using Sulky Solvy Water Soluble Stabilizer and a permanent-ink marker, or using a Sulky Iron-On Transfer Pen and Sulky Solvy or Super Solvy to make multiple copies of your quilting design with just one tracing. Joyce demonstrates how easy free-motion quilting can be using the Fabric-Mover on the Viking Designer SE. Show #2912 Free-motion Magic with Eric Drexler Eric Drexler, Sales and Education Coordinator for Sulky, is the king of free-motion work. Eric shares his expertise and excitement for this old, but always new again technique. Eric talks about how to do free-motion work on a preprinted batik panel of a dragon. Specifically he shows how to take a drawing and size it to your need, then transfer the drawing to Sulky Soft 'n Sheer Cut-Away Stabilizer to use as a pattern. The actual small dragon embroidery is done on Soft 'n Sheer Cut-Away Stabilizer and then appliquéd with straight stitching onto the denim shirt. Eric also shows a pair of jeans embellished with his free-motion embroidery for his daughter, Amber, using Sulky Super Solvy water soluble stabilizer to transfer the design to the jeans, and then Sulky Totally Stable Iron-On Stabilizer to stabilize the wrong side. Eric then took a digitized computerized design, reproduced it for free-motion work, and drew it on the Soft 'n Sheer. Eric shows the beauty and ease of making your own free-motion embroidered design, that duplicates the computerized design, but brings the singular beauty of free-motion to the work. Eric explains the quality of the wooden hoops that he uses for his free-motion work and why he chooses them. Also, that he prefers a 14/90 topstitch needle even with the lightweight Sulky 40 wt. Rayon because it reduces the stress on the thread. Eric shows how this work transfers to free-motion quilting or how quilters can so easily do free-motion embroidery if they are already free-motion quilters. Show #2901 Terrific Pillow Techniques with Joyce Drexler Joyce Drexler, Creative Director for Sulky of America, shows some truly amazing pillow embellishments designed by Carol Ingram, Designer for Sulky. Using the Sulky Cotton Blendables together with the beautiful decorative stitches on the machine, Carol has created the most magnificent silk dupioni pillows incorporating lots of different embellishment techniques. Joyce specifically shows, step-by-step, a woven pillow made with padded, decorative stitched strips, woven tightly together over Sulky Tender Touch Stabilizer. Sue offers some terrific tips on using the Sulky Polyester Invisible Thread. Carol knitted a beautiful entrelac pillow cover and then added a silk piece that was enhanced with yarn using the yarn couching foot. There is also a beautiful knitted, mitered pillow cover that is attached to silk dupioni. It takes your breath away! All knitted pieces are blocked and fused to Sulky Tender Touch Stabilizer. For the Quick Project, Jody Hooker, Viking Educator, used Sulky Cotton Thread in the serger to chain-stitch over English netting and Sulky Fabri-Solvy to create a fancy, translucent band which is then stitched onto a t-shirt using woven ribbon as a frame for the band.

Show #2810 Cherish the Inner Child Multi-Media Art with Carol Ingram Carol takes her artistic talent and refines it so that the average person can reproduce what she has done. Using Sulky Cut-Away Plus™ as the "painter's canvas" reinforced by ironing Sulky Fuse 'n Stitch™ Permanent Stabilizer onto the back of the Cut-Away Plus, Carol creates a firm "canvas" that accepts fabric dye and Sulky Iron-On Transfer Pen Ink perfectly. Once the "canvas" is dyed in multi-colors, Carol then shows us how to stencil using Sulky Totally Stable™ as the iron-on "stencil" to draw wavy lines using a stencil brush and stencil Paintsticks™. Many of the design elements, including the coral, the lettering, and the child's face are then traced using the Sulky Iron-On Transfer Pen (in the reverse) so that when placed onto the artwork they will iron on right side up. Carol then shows how to layer the top "canvas" with batting and a backing fabric using the new, improved Sulky KK 2000™ Temporary Spray Adhesive, and stitch with the Sulky heavy 12 wt. Cotton Thread along the wavy, stenciled lines.

Show #2801 Beyond Corded Bowls with Sulky with Joyce Drexler Joyce Drexler and her son, Eric Drexler, now take us beyond the basics of corded bowls from the book Quick and Easy Weekend Quilting with Sulky (#900B-16), into a whole new realm featuring lids, embellished top knots, handles, serged wrap fabric and more. Eric shows some of his bowls that have a spiral look with one edge finished with a rolled hem edge on the fabric using either Sulky 30 wt. Rayon or Sulky 30 wt. Cotton Blendables. Eric shows an avante garde trivet, and a set of coasters in a matching basket with rolled-hem bows on each handle. A terrific hostess gift! Eric also cut up a pair of his jeans and did a rolled hem on the strips and wrapped those into a nice masculine looking bowl. Eric puts his own spin on the finished edges of the bowls using 3-dimensional loops in one or two rows. Joyce also shows how to wrap eyelash yarn around the final row of the bowl to add texture and fun. Joyce shows some of Sulky National Educator, Nancy Sapin's bowls which feature nice, stiff handles made with Sulky Fuse 'n Stitch, as well as embellishments for the handles like buttons, fringed edges. Joyce shows how to make multiple-knot "froggy" handles for the lid; and how to make 3-D, reversible appliqués to show off the beautiful theme fabrics as they are before they are cut.

Show #2713 Fabric Manipulation and Embellishment on the Serger with Carol Ingram Carol shows you how to do fabric manipulation to give texture to your project. Stabilizing the fabric for the manipulation with Sulky Tender Touch™ Iron-On Stabilizer. Embellishing on the 5-thread serger using the chain stitch, 2 strands of 12-wt. in the chain looper, and Sulky Polyester Invisible in the main needle (a topstitch 14/90). Carol also gathered the fabric with the differential feed resulting in beautiful ruched silk dupioni which she turned into a beautiful table runner and pillow. Carol explains how to use the Tender Touch in other ways such as behind smocking, and on the back of computerized embroideries. Perfect for embroidering on sweater knits.

Show #2701 Clever Corded Bowls and Baskets with Joyce Drexler Joyce Drexler, Creative Director for Sulky, her son, Eric, and Sue Hausmann, on the set of "America Sews with Sue Hausmann". Joyce Drexler and her son, Eric, bring back the ever-popular corded bowl that we first introduced 20 years ago in our first Sulky book, now out of print, but renewed in the current book, Quick and Easy Weekend Quilting with Sulky (#900B-16). Joyce shows lots of embellishing techniques for the bowls, trivets and placemats: Applique 3-D Butterflies Blooming Bias with bowls and quilts Patriotic Trims Holiday Appliques Joyce explains the type of cording that works best for firm bowls, as well as other supplies needed for these simple projects. Joyce also shows a "naked" corded bowl made using bare cord and using the free-arm of the sewing machine, and then how to dye it and put ink designs on the now-dyed bowl. The Sulky Cotton Blendables (12 wt. on the top and 30 wt. in the bobbin), are the perfect threads to blend with all colors and types of fabrics. She uses a multi-zig-zag stitch (3-step stitch), but just a regular zig-zag machine will do this project well. Joyce's son, Eric, is also introduced on the show and helps Joyce demonstrate how to wrap the cording and is surprised with a "birthday bowl" that Joyce made for him to match the quilt that his 15-year old daughter, Amber, made for him with her grandmother, Joyce's help. Joyce shows how to make an oval shaped bowl, placemat, or dresser cover, too. And lots of additional embellishments using Sulky Fuse 'n Stitch and Sulky Super Solvy. It seems people just cannot get enough of this fun and easy technique. Lots of variations are shown on this show. But, as usual, we ran out of time to cover all the fun embellishments on the baskets. So tune into series 2800 to see more.

Show #2612 Fabulous Felting with Carol Ingram Carol Ingram dazzles us once again with her creative felting techniques. Carol introduces us to the Cottswald sheep (not a live one, though) and how beautifully the wool of that curly sheep dyes. Carol takes a plain, ready-to-wear vest and embellishes it with the felting machine. But she doesn't stop there! She then adds free-motion work, hand-work and beading to the felted project. Carol shares her techniques for transferring the designs to the base wool fabric using Sulky Totally Stable Tear-Away Stabilizer, which gives you the shape of your design and color placement, which makes it easy for a non-artist to create pretty, realistic designs that actually look like grapes and leaves, not just a muddled free-form look. She then details the grapes and leaves using Sulky Cotton 12 wt. Blendables to add dimension and definition to the individual parts of the project. To apply the design to the felted wool roving, Carol traced the pattern onto Sulky Solvy Water Soluble Stabilizer which easily releases from the stitching with just a wet Q-tip when the embellishing is complete. She goes one step further and adds beautiful beads to give the project even more life. Her bonus project shows a knitted bag, which has been felted and then embellished with Sulky Holoshimmer Thread and beads.

Show #2601 Thread Magic with Joyce Drexler Joyce shows even more exciting garments made entirely with Sulky Rayon Thread made by Evelyn Byler, Educator and Designer extraordinaire, for Sulky of America. You actually MAKE YOUR OWN FABRIC! She demonstrates how to draw the design onto Ultra Solvy using your favorite pattern. You can stitch it with all white Sulky Rayon Thread and then dye it yourself, or you can use colored Sulky Rayon Threads to make a colored garment without any dying. Joyce describes all the different weights and types of water soluble stabilizers and what works best for these kinds of garments. She explains how to join the pieces to make it large enough for your pattern. Many of the samples were stitched on a long-arm machine, but they can all be done on a home sewing machine with only straight stitch capability. Joyce shares tips to finish the edges of these magnificent garments so that the edges are perfectly clean and straight, and then she explains how to successfully remove this large quantity of heavy Ultra Solvy in your washing machine or bathtub. Sue's vest which was also made by Evelyn Byler, was done by drawing the design onto Ultra Solvy and filled in with Sulky colored rayon threads. Joyce also shares using this same technique with Sulky 12 wt. and 30 wt. Cotton Threads. A speedy version using a yarn grid-work is also shown, as well as and a full coat and vest made with that technique, and something as small and quick as a scarf made with yarns and beautiful Sulky metallic threads. For the quick project, Jill Repp from June Tailor shows how to make easy diamond patchwork.

Show #2501 Sulky Embellished Jackets with Joyce Drexler As promised on the previous taping, Joyce shows us how to make the terrific overshirt which is also shown on the cover of our newest book, Quick and Easy Weekend Quilting with Sulky (900B-16). Simple techniques for turning a plain shirt into a designer wearable, even ways to cover the "dark shadow" left when a pocket is removed including paint, inks, embroideries, and even appliqués. She also gives hints on choosing the appropriate shirt to decorate. Terrific stabilizer hints for embroidering the designs using Sulky Fabri-Solvy, Sticky+ and liquid Solvy. Joyce Drexler shows a really simple and fun quilt from the book, Quick and Easy Weekend Quilting with Sulky. This is a perfect quilt for any theme fabric that you want to showcase in a quilt for those friends and family who have "special interests". This quilt goes together in no time. It is quilted with Sulky 30 wt. Multi-color Rayon Thread using decorative stitches and free-motion swirls. Sue Hausmann does a really terrific rotary cutter demonstration, and Joyce demos pressing secrets and chain-piecing, as well as how to use KK 2000 Temporary Spray Adhesive to effortlessly spray-baste your wallhanging before quilting. Joyce also shows the Thimbleberries fabric version (which is made with a flannel cottage motif) and she accents the beautiful print using Sulky 30 wt. Cotton that makes the feature fabric really "pop". The checkerboard border makes a dramatic frame. Sue Hausmann mentioned, "I also love using Sulky 30 wt. Cotton thread to piece my quilts!" Notice on Joyce's shirt, the cats jumping over the embroidered snowflakes, which are made from scraps from the quilt. Hmmm....that could be another show! In the book, Quick and Easy Weekend Quilting with Sulky, there are also directions for making a matching fabric rag bowl and a cute button-flanged pillow and from the scraps.

Sue demonstrates how to apply fusible batting. Look at what else you will get: some wonderful decorative stitching ideas; repositioning appliqué pieces using KK 2000 and then free-motion stitching; and terrific tips for using Sulky Polyester Invisible Thread in the bobbin! Carol also shows placemats embellished with a free-motion floral design using the free pattern from the new book on the Sulky website, www.sulky.com You'll also be inspired by the matching table-topper and tablerunner made from the scraps. What fun - and another present made for the next holiday, anniversary or birthday. There are numerous versions of this quilt in the book, as well as other quilts using theme fabrics and borders. One example is done with Joyce's Grand Flowers Embroidery Card #43021 by Great Notions, both as a filled version and also an artsy outline embroidered version that is then colored with Tsukineko Inks. There is something for everone in this collage of projects.

Show #804: Joyce Drexler - Square Dance with Blendables Joyce shows how to make designer sweatshirts - and you're the designer! It couldn't be simpler. Using one fabric that has a theme with a fairly large design, and then little squares that "dance" around the theme fabric. With the Sulky Blendables you can stitch around the designs with a decorative stitch. The Blendables are so "forgiving" that it makes using decorative stitches a snap. Joyce makes it even easier by providing a grid that transfers onto the shirt using the Sulky Iron-On Transfer pens. Then all you have to do is fill in each little square with your square of fabric that has a fusible web on the back and iron them down. In no time at all, your sweatshirt is done. It's just as easy to make one for a friend at the same time!

Show #805: Carol Ingram - Technology/Art/and Quilting Carol shows how to take a favorite painting, photo, or drawing, how to enlarge, enhance it, and turn it into a magnificent quilt. With the technology available with inexpensive paint programs, you can become an artist. Carol enlarged the artwork and printed it on a inkjet printer on 8-1/2" x 11" crepe de chine printable fabric pieces. Carol shows how to highlight the grayscale photo using Sulky 12 wt. and 30 wt. Cotton Thread to stipple stitch, and then applied a pale blush of Tsukineko inks. Smoke invisible thread on the back.

Show #705 - Taming the Minkee™ Carol Ingram shows you how to use stabilizers to tame the slinky, Minkee™, slippery fabrics to successfully make perfectly pieced quilts, wallhangings or pillows. She quilted, embroidered on it, pleated, gathered it and with no trouble using stabilizers to make the Minkee behave. Done on a Pfaff Sewing Machine using the IDT, stitch-in-the ditch foot, pleater/ruffler, 1/4 inch foot, and gathering foot. Carol shows a beautiful Moses basket done with chenille and embellished with ribbons and bows, and a precious gift basket filled with baby shower items and decorated with the wonderful Minkee fabric.
