Hi Everyone,

I wish all of you a happy, healthy, prosperous and fun New Year! Everyone I talk to is excited that they have sewing machines and can still do what they love this year. Not only that, but we can also do what we love FOR THOSE WE LOVE! It doesn't get any better than that!

My mother had a slight heart attack in the first part of December so we threw our things in the car and drove down to Florida from North Carolina, and there we stayed for the rest of the month. (I know that doesn't sound like a hardship and, for the most part, it wasn't.) I was blessed to spend some quality time with my mother who is now 88 and dealing with Parkinson's disease, too. Although she is pretty frail, she seems to be stabilized now. I also spent a lot of time with our kids and their families and it was truly a blessed Christmas. It didn't matter that I had left some of the Christmas presents at home in our haste. We had love and laughter and wonderful food (my husband, Fred, cooks)!

So, although it was not the Christmas I had planned, it was indeed the one we were supposed to have, and I am most grateful.

I am very excited about this year's Sulky Teacher Certification Classes which we have put together based on requests from so many of you. It is called "Sulky Techniques Galore and More!" More and more people are turning to their sewing and quilting skills to both economize and forge a new career at this pivotal time in our history. Won't you join us for 3 days of fun and learning? Whether you intend to teach or not, these skills will be useful to you your entire life and who knows where it might lead? There will be lots more information on these wonderful projects and techniques below and in our monthly newsletters to come.

Last month I told you about my program on "America Sews with Sue Hausmann" that our son, Eric, and I taped in Cleveland in December. It was rewarding to see that Eric, and his girlfriend, June, both took the theme from the show "Beyond Corded Bowls" (Show #2801) and made lots of gifts for family and friends this Christmas. Eric and June are shown below in front of the antique buggy at Abigayle's Quiltery in Olmsted Falls, OH, where we spent the weekend quilting and sewing. Be sure to visit this wonderful quilt shop if you are ever in the area.

The other program that we did for this "America Sews" series featured my good friend and amazing artist and designer for Sulky, Carol Ingram. Carol has a real talent for taking her artistic talent and refining it so that the average person can reproduce what she has done. Using Sulky Cut-Away Plus as the "painter's canvas", reinforced by ironing Sulky Fuse 'n Stitch Permanent Stabilizer onto the back of it, Carol creates a firm "canvas" that accepts fabric dye and Transfer Pen Ink perfectly. Once the "canvas" is dyed in multi-colors, Carol then shows us how to stencil using Sulky Totally Stable as the iron-on "stencil" to draw wavy lines using a stencil brush and stencil paint sticks.

This project is shown below along with more information about the upcoming show.

Thank you for taking the time to watch us on these shows for the many years we've been doing this together! Let's keep the fun coming in 2009!

Until next year - Express Yourself!
Joyce Drexler Creative Director and
Co-Founder of Sulky of America

America Sews with Sue Hausmann

Continuing on with what Joyce mentioned above... Carol then shows how to layer the top "canvas" with batting and a backing fabric using the new, improved Sulky KK 2000 Temporary Spray Adhesive, and stitch with the heavier Sulky 12 wt. Cotton thread along the wavy stenciled lines.

Many of the design elements, including the coral, the lettering, and the child's face, are then traced using the Sulky Iron-On Transfer Pen (in the reverse) so that when placed onto the artwork they will iron on right side up.

Carol contributed a wonderful similar project using these techniques in our latest book, An Updated Supplement to Sulky's Secrets to Successful Stabilizing (#900B-17).

Carol showed this project step-by-step on a recent PBS-TV show "Quilting Arts TV".

INTRODUCING THE EVEN BETTER SULKY KK 2000 - GREEN!

    Safe for You . . .
  • Exclusively Non-Flammable
  • Non-Toxic
  • Odorless and Clear

  • Safe for the Planet . . .
  • Ozone Friendly
  • No CFS'S or HCFC's

  • Maximum Coverage . . .
  • Very High Ratio of Active Ingredient to Propellant
  • Minimal Overspray

The cans with the GREEN LIDS contain a new formulation that allows you to spray even closer with virtually no staining. Spray about 6 inches from the receiving surface.

LOOK FOR THE NEW CAN WITH THE GREEN LID AND EARTH LABEL.

Still the great product you have come to love but with more emphasis on the "Green" components so important to all of us today. Sulky Temporary Spray Adhesive contains HIGHLY CONCENTRATED, non-flammable material combined with an improved directional valve and low-pressure spray to eliminate wasteful over-spraying.

You still get as much coverage with a small can of KK 2000 as you get with the larger cans because KK 2000 is highly concentrated; combine that with a low-pressure propellant and state-of-the-art spray nozzle and you get a precise spray pattern that you can direct exactly where you want it. No wasteful over-spraying.

The improved spray nozzle allows closer spraying without fear of propellant build-up.

SULKY CO-SPONSORS THE 2009 HOFFMAN CHALLENGE

As most of you know, we discontinued the Sulky Challenge several years ago mostly as a result of the direct hit that our Florida facility took from Hurricane Charley. We are really delighted to now be able to co-sponsor the prestigious Hoffman Challenge, which has a long, rich history of encouraging and rewarding creativity. Since numerous past entrees in the Hoffman Challenge have featured extensive and often dramatic uses of Sulky Decorative Rayon, Metallic and Cotton Threads, we love being able to co-sponsor this Challenge going forward so that we can acknowledge and reward the best of future entrants who use Sulky Products. Consumers know they can Quilt with Confidence with Hoffman Fabrics and "Create with Confidence"™ with Sulky Products. Now, they can do it all in one big contest. Go to hoffmanchallenge.com for much more information and to fill out your online entry form.
