Hi Everyone,

March is here and Spring is sprung (in some places anyway), or just around the corner. It's a lovely, hopeful time of the year and certainly one of my favorites. We, however, got a touch of real winter when we taped with "Quilting Arts" in Cleveland, OH, in January. It was pretty moderate until the last day and then it got wicked, and we ran south.

We had a great time at the taping. I did one of my favorite things for my program - a tree! I so love trees. The tree trunk was appliquéd onto the pieced background and then I made machine-fed satin-stitched limbs using a Sulky Super Solvy pattern for design placement. The poem in the background, by Candace Kelly, is one that I have had on my wall for many years, and it always renews me. I printed it out on Printer Fabric and inserted it next to the tree.

I then quilted the background using one of my favorite Sulky Cotton Blendables. For the base of the wallhanging I used a foundation-pieced pattern by Carol Doak that she was offering for free on her website www.caroldoak.com. I printed the pattern out on Sulky Paper Solvy so when the project was complete, it just dissolved away - no endless tearing of tiny bits of paper. We'll insert some photos below from this project.

Carol Ingram did a really artsy program too on Sulky Fiber Felting. If you've stayed away from felting because it is just "too homemade-looking", wait until you see what she's done with it.

The highlight, of course, was our weekend quilting at Abigayle's Quiltery in Olmsted Falls, OH. We were thrilled that a gifted fiber-artist and long-time friend, Heidi Lund from Bremerton, WA, was also in town taping with Quilting Arts and she joined us for a fun weekend of quilting and sharing. Check out this motley-looking crew below out in front of Abigayle's. We so seldom get to see Heidi anymore since we're at opposite ends of the country, but she never fails to inspire us with her creativity and incredible wallhangings. Heidi was the featured cover artist on the 2007 Quilting Arts Magazine Calendar. Her "Gathering of Leaves" wallhanging is spectacular. Visit her website and view her amazing art: www.heidilund.com

I hope one of our projects will inspire you to "bloom"!

The tree limbs were stitched using a machine-fed satin stitch and Sulky 40 wt. Rayon Thread. Joyce stabilized the background using two layers of Sulky Totally Stable Iron-On Stabilizer so that it would support the heavy satin stitching.

CAROL INGRAM TAKES THE "HOKIE" OUT OF MACHINE FELTING
This is not your grandma's felting!

Carol takes machine felting to a whole new level with her artsy, one-of-kind, no-holds-barred style.

Carol used dyed Cut-Away Plus that had been textured with rock salt as the base for her "Forever Begins Today" wallhanging (below). She used a Sulky Iron-On Transfer Pen to transfer artsy sayings from a scrapbooking sayings book onto a framed piece of art.

The beaded dragonfly with gossamer wings was made with Sulky Metallic Threads on a Solvy base.

Both of these very dramatic projects will be featured in our soon to be released Sulky Secrets to Successful Stabilizing Supplement, which will be filled with new and exciting projects using many of our newest stabilizers.

Watch for these fun and inspiring PBS-TV shows coming soon!

Layered Piecings With Raw-Edge Cutwork Appliqué by Virgie Fisher

One of the coolest projects from our book, Embellishing Concepts in Sulky, Virgie's fearless style and color sense rockets this vest into a contemporary fashion statement.

Virgie Fisher is a nationally known designer and has participated in the Fairfield and Bernina Fashion Shows for over 16 years. Her work has been featured in galleries, books, magazines and she has appeared on TV. She was the first textile artist to be invited to hang her work in the California State Capitol for over 7 weeks. Virgie did an exhibit in the Governor's Hall where she displayed her famous Sacramento Sesquicentennial quilt and invited several quilters to join her, including Alex Anderson of Simply Quilts. Virgie was commissioned by Wells Fargo to create 6 art quilts, which have been displayed in their world headquarters building in Sacramento, California for 16 years.
