Dear Sulky Friends,

Our 3-week Motorcycle trip to New England from the 26th of September through the 16th of October was really great. As I mentioned before, it was Fred and I and Carol and Bill Ingram on our motorcycles (trikes with 2 back wheels). I got the oddest tan on my face! It started about 3" out from the sides of my face and up to my eyes where the helmet didn't cover. I am sure people who saw me thought I looked really strange.

We enjoyed excellent seafood all up and down the Atlantic coast as we followed US 1. We tried to eat in small Mom-and-Pop restaurants so we could sample the local home cooking. The leaves in Maine were outstanding - so many reds and oranges, more than I have ever seen before. We came back through the mountains of Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and North Carolina. It was the best. The only thing I didn't like was leaving at 8:30 each morning! I would have liked to sleep in until 10:00 maybe - like a real vacation. Carol and I should have planned at least one spa day!

We got to go on some interesting factory tours: Hershey Chocolate, Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, and the Harley Motorcycle Factory. We went to Williamsburg, VA; Lancaster, PA; Plymouth, MA and Salem, MA and experienced a lot of America's history.

The total trip was almost 4,000 miles. Fortunately we went at a nice pace, stopping around 5 or 6 each evening. We saw so many pumpkins for sale and Halloween decorated houses! Mostly we took back roads - roads less traveled when possible. We enjoyed seeing the many farms and beautiful countryside as well as the coast. Carol and Bill had a GPS so it was really easy to find motels. We took turns navigating too.

In Salem we saw a cool street act - a fellow and his sister who could bend every which way! Unreal! They were very entertaining to watch and listen to. We got to ride a ferry across the water between Vermont and New York. We saw the Neptune Parade and sand sculptures in Virginia Beach. We played Rummicube three times - I was the big winner!!! And Fred got to watch the Cleveland Indians in the playoffs each night (he grew up in Akron OH as a fan of the Indians). I read 3 books! Only had to do laundry one night! It doesn't get any better than that! We met so many nice people and fellow bikers. Everyone was always waving and giving us the thumbs up! We lived the dream.

I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving.

HOUSTON QUILT MARKET

We just came back from exhibiting at the Houston International Quilt Market, which is a Trade Show for Quilt Stores to attend and find products for their stores. It was, as always, exciting and motivating. You come back just wanting to "make things" and instead you need to catch up on what fell behind while you were gone. But we collected lots of new patterns, books, and brochures to keep us motivated for another year.

Surprisingly, felting is still very hot, as is redwork by machine and by hand, and needlepunch. We passed out lots of our spools of thread to the vendors who were promoting these techniques to encourage them to try the Sulky 12 wt. and 30 wt. Cotton and Cotton Blendables™ for both redwork and needlepunch.

If you haven't tried the "endless spool" of Sulky Cotton Threads for your craft, you will love them. For those who do needlepunch, you have one continuous strand of thread - no re-threading and no separating floss. The Sulky Cotton Blendables look magnificent in Needlepunch and Redwork designs.

Walking around looking at the new home-dec things, I was reminded that we haven't told you a lot about our newest stabilizers:

Sulky Fuse 'n Stitch™

Ideal for projects that need extra stiffness and retained support. Iron it in place wherever a permanent interfacing might be used. Because it is a non-woven stabilizer it is perfect for continuous hoop embroidery, tote bags, lampshades, purses, bookcovers, scrapbooking, wallhangings, etc.

Fuse 'n Stitch is also great for:
  • Stitching Designs onto
    Medium to Heavyweight Fabrics
  • Dense Embroidery Designs
  • Crazy Quilting
  • Appliqué
  • Handwork
  • Purses
  • Fabric Bowls
  • Pockets
  • Totes
  • Endless or Continuous
    hoop embroidery
  • Placemats
  • Home Decorating Items
  • Table Runners
  • Couching
  • Heirloom Sewing
  • Wing-Needle Work
  • Reverse Bobbin Work
  • Fabric Scrunching
  • Fabric Pleating
In the Sweetheart Bag pictured below (designed by Diane Gloystein, a Sulky Freelance National Educator), we used both Fuse 'n Stitch and Fabri-Solvy. This was one of the classes taught in the 2007 Sulky Certified Teacher Training Program. Look for next year's 2008 locations and dates listed above. Please join us in congratulating Dianne for her invitation to create a garment for the prestigious 2008 Bernina Fashion Show. Pat Rodgers, another gifted Sulky Educator, has also made a garment for the show when it was the Fairfield Fashion Show. Joyce Drexler, Creative Director for Sulky of America was also a Designer for an earlier Fairfield Fashion Show. We are surrounded by amazing talent!

Sulky Fabri-Solvy

This unique product has the firmness and feel of fabric, which allows a multitude of possible applications. You will fall in love with its non-woven strength and quality for computer embroidery, cutwork, lace making and appliqué. It has the firmness of fabric but it washes away completely, placing no stress on your beautiful thread work. I particularly like using Fabri-Solvy when I am making multiple computerized machine embroidery designs because it is unaffected by the heat of my machine (which can be intense after doing a number of designs). Fabri-Solvy is also great for:
  • Thread Lace
  • Faux-woven Scarves
  • Free-standing Embroidery Motifs
  • Emblems
  • Toweling or Napped Fabrics Topper
  • Cutwork
  • Richelieu
  • Edges
  • Bridging
  • Buttonholes
  • 3-D Appliqué
  • Monogramming
  • Heirloom Sewing by Machine and Serger
  • Quilting
  • Delicate fabrics
