INTRODUCING "QUILTING ARTS" PBS-TV SHOWWe are excited beyond measure to be a sponsor of this terrific new PBS-TV show. Hosted by Patricia "Pokey" Bolton who is Editor-in-Chief of the magazine of the same name, this cutting-edge show is expected to introduce all of us to new and exciting techniques to incorporate into our quilts, home-dec and garments. Pokey is pictured below with Sue Hausmann ("America Quilts with Sue Hausmann").
For the first series, which should be available to view in January, 2008, Joyce Drexler, Creative Director for Sulky of America, presented a program using sun-dyed fabrics. Joyce shows how to do a really simple and fast quilt block that is just repositioned to add interest to the quilt. The sun-dyed fabrics add a contemporary look and serve as a palette and guide for free-motion quilting. By twisting the blocks it gives beautiful motion and flow to the quilt. A magnificent version of this hand-dyed quilt is shown in our newest book, Quick and Easy Weekend Quilting with Sulky (#900-B-16). This is called "Sashed Squares Quilt" and is shown in 3 different color ways in the book. There are step-by-step instructions for making the quilt (but not sun-dying the fabric).
The leaves that are sun-dyed into the fabrics become the pattern to follow when you free-motion, and then you can do tiny stipple quilting around the free-motioned leaves within the center of the block. The Sulky Cotton Blendables look so natural on these hand-dyed fabrics and add lots of texture and dimension. The subtle, random color changes of the Sulky Cotton Blendables add a lot of forgiveness to the stippling stitch (some of us need more forgiveness than others).
Joyce also presents quick tips about getting your quilting designs onto your quilt using Sulky Solvy Water Soluble Stabilizer and a permanent-ink marker, or using a Sulky Iron-On Transfer Pen and Sulky Solvy or Super Solvy to make multiple copies of your quilting design with just one tracing. Joyce demonstrates how easy free-motion quilting can be using the Fab-U-Motion™ Fabric Mover on the Husqvarna Viking Designer SE. Here is the quilt from the new book in its entirety:

FREE Project of the MonthSulky Appliqué with Fringe and Natural fibers![]() Here is a project by Joyce Drexler that truly expresses her love of fibers and embellishing. This was the cover project on our book, Surface Design Concepts in Sulky (#900B-6). Joyce put this elegant design on a raw silk jacket and it was a show-stopper! You could use this same design on any wearable, as well as a purse, tote, pillow, or make a one-of-a-kind art wallhanging. Let that artist inside of you OUT! Express yourself creatively using Sulky products. |
