Dear Sulky Friends,

I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July with your friends and family. Our house was filled with children and grandchildren, and July is just flying by. Some of the week was filled with my husband, Fred, taking the grandchildren on motorcycle rides. I thought you'd enjoy seeing a picture of Fred and me on our motorcycle (which is really a trike). This picture was taken in front of the famous Wall Drug Store in South Dakota on our trip out west a couple of years ago.

In June, Carol Ingram and I again went to Cleveland to tape two "America Sews with Sue Hausmann" PBS TV shows. We have not gotten the photos from these shows, so we'll tell you and show you more about them next month.

Many of you have requested that some of our free projects be serger projects, so this month we have included a "Feathered Boa" from one of our earlier books that is no longer in print. We will try to keep our serger friends in mind more often when we offer free projects. The things you can do with sergers today is so much more than just serging seams. Sergers are indeed creative tools that are too often underused in our sewing rooms.

The effects you can get with some of Sulky's specialty threads that are now available are truly amazing. Sulky Cotton solid colors and Blendables are beautiful for many of the new serger techniques like the cover stitch, and even the older flat-lock stitch is made new again with the use of these unique and unusual threads. Sulky Blendables are subtle, multi-color cotton threads that change color every couple of inches. Ideal for quilting batiks, mottled solids, florals or any multi-colored or shaded fabric. One "Blendable" will work with many different colored and textured fabrics. The blending effects that you can create with these 100% Cotton Threads are like nothing you have ever seen before!

The sophistication of the newer sergers makes using Sulky Metallics even more fun than before. Drag that serger out of your closet and find out what kind of decorative things you can do with it!

Until next month - Express Yourself!

Crocheted Zoo

We are constantly amazed at what creative people continue to do with our threads. The following photo was sent to us by a very patient and creative lady by the name of Ellen Smock from San Diego, CA. She CROCHETED the rhino and the tree completely out of Sulky 12 wt. Cotton Blendables. The tree trunk is made from the #4011 Milk Chocolate and #4010 Caramel Apple - two of my favorites! The rhino is made from #4028 Storm Clouds.
I hope she will continue to share her "zoo" with us as it grows. Thank you Ellen - I just love these!

Meet The Staff

I thought you might like to see who "we" are. For those of you who don't know me, I'm Patti Lee, Vice President of Consumer Relations for Sulky of America. I have worked with Fred and Joyce Drexler (who most of you know) since before they started Sulky of America. In addition to being my best friends, they are also the best people you could ever work for, but I digress...

Pictured below on the set of "America Sews with Sue Hausmann" are (left to right) Joyce Drexler, Creative Director for Sulky of America, Patti Lee, Sue Hausmann, Evelyn Byler (who is a sample-maker extraordinaire for Sulky and one of the finest long arm quilters in the country), Carol Ingram who is also a designer for Sulky and has been a long-time guest for Sulky on Sue's program as well as "America Quilts Creatively", "Quilts Central", "Kaye's Quilting Friends", and Martha Pullen's show.

It's hard to call taping these shows "work" when you do it with such generous, kind and fun people. And, of course, don't forget...when we're done it's off to Abigayles Quiltery in Olmsted Falls, OH, to spend the weekend quilting with friends!

Thought for July

Thought for July: Life is like a roller-coaster. You can either hang on for dear life and scream in terror, or you can put your hands up in the air and enjoy the ride. - Karne

FREE Project of the Month

Feathered Boa

As Joyce mentioned, this is from one of our books, Updated Serger Concepts in Sulky, (900B-5) which is no longer in print. We would love to see this project done with some of our newer thread, so please share photos with us if you do this project. (Send to: Info@sulky.com) This is a fun boa or hip wrap that the younger set will really enjoy. Next month I'll share some hair ornaments and other accessories made on the serger. These could be fun projects for the teenagers over the summer. Surely they're already bored!

For complete directions go to www.sulky.com for a printable version.
