Dear Sulky Friends,

Compared to last month, everything looks so drab with all the holiday decorations gone. It will be at least a month until we can start decorating for Spring, and I know that's pushing it in some places. If you haven't seen my wallhangings based on my Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter cards for Cactus Punch, I'll include some photos below. Hanging these up in a prominent place really seems to make the seasons fly. Or, it could be that seasons fly at my age for no reason at all!

I have noticed that the Winter goes by much faster when you spend weekends sewing with friends which, as many of you know, was the basis for my newest book, Quick and Easy Weekend Quilting with Sulky. It is just "sew" much fun to get together and actually sew on at least one day of the weekend, if for no other reason than we actually get some of our UFO's (Unfinished Objects) finished. I am blessed with the bonus that Fred (my wonderful husband of 30+ years) enjoys cooking lunch and often dinner for our group. Does that sound like a heavenly day, or what? It couldn't be more perfect.

So, I hope my new book inspires some of you to set aside a day to actually sew and/or quilt with friends. Time goes by too quickly otherwise and we don't get to do what we enjoy the most with the friends we don't see often enough.

I'll share some photos from my new book later on in this newsletter. Something may just tickle your fancy and put you on the path to starting a "Weekend Quilting" group of your own.

I wish you all a wonderful Valentine's Day and hope you share your love with someone special, or even your very special furry friend.

Until next month - Express Yourself!

PBS TV SHOW UPDATE

Last month Joyce taped another "America Sews with Sue Hausmann" show that featured "Window Wonder" blocks from one of the quilts in our newest book Quick and Easy Weekend Quilting with Sulky. Joyce demonstrates how to use different theme fabrics to make a quilt or pillow geared towards the interests or passions of the recipient of the quilt or pillow. (There's no reason why you can't make one for yourself as well! Sew for yourself? What a concept!)

Yes, that is Joyce on the left without glasses. After wearing glasses for 47 years, Joyce had Lasiks surgery a couple of months ago! Joyce featured juvenile prints, flannel men-type prints, Halloween prints, and even computerized embroideries. Using this very simple block she showed endless possibilities with a variety of fabrics and how to "fussy cut" even an oversized print to fit in your "window". She also showed how to use border prints or accent prints to frame the center square.

Joyce added a special technique on how to take a tracing of an object out of the quilt-feature-fabric, enlarge it, and trace it onto Sulky Solvy Stabilizer. She then used it as a quilting template to stitch it out with Sulky 12 wt. Cotton Blendables on the top and a matching 30 wt. Cotton in the bobbin. Also shown is how to stitch-in-the-ditch using Sulky Holoshimmer Thread and a stitch-in-the-ditch foot.

Featured in the next newsletter in the PBS update: Carol Ingram, Designer for Sulky shows viewers free-motion techniques and Metallic Thread hints. Carol will show you how to make a trapunto flower on a pillow top.

Sneak Peek From the Newest Sulky Book
Quick and Easy Weekend Quilting with Sulky

I couldn't resist showing you this picture of our granddaughter, Carissa, on one of the quilts (Sashed Squares) that I made for the new book! Isn't she precious? (I know, I know - I'm a biased grandmother - but she is!)

This particular quilt is so fast and easy to do. We also show a version in hand-dyed fabrics and one done in batik fabrics.

It went together in no time at all and it really has wonderful open areas to do special quilting if you want. It's perfect for those really special fabrics that you want to feature in a large block.
