In just six 15-45 minute segments, learn from Eric Drexler, the Master of Free-Motion, how to easily move beyond the basics of Free-Motion Stitching so you can enjoy more intricate Thread Painting, Quilting, Print Embellishment, Turned or Raw Edge Appliqué, and much, much more!

Eric introduced you to the basics in "Fearless Free-Motion Stitching I - For Beginners". It was an incredible success and we thank you. He covers some of the basics again in this course (so you do not necessarily have to take the first course before this one); and we include a free, 26-page hand-out from the basic course to help you along on this adventure, if you haven't taken it. (And for those who have, as well, as a refresher.) Our online classes are made in conjunction with our partners from CraftOnlineUniversity.com

What You'll Learn:

Lesson 1 - Free-Motion Stitching - A Refresher:

Eric goes slowly and specifically through the set-up of your machine for free-motion stitching, including:
  • Making a practice quilt sandwich
  • Feed dog drop or cover
  • Proper free-motion foot and why
  • Tension and making minor adjustments
  • Thread types and positioning on the machine
  • Bobbin threads - the options
  • Hands and arm positioning
  • Tying on and tying off
  • Machine speed setting
  • Moving the sandwich or hoop at the proper speed
  • Hooping your work when not creating a quilted item
  • Needles - so important
  • Troubleshooting
  • And much, much more!

Downloadable, printed patterns are provided in the course for many of these free-motion techniques, so you can practice and mentally "groove" these motions as much as you want before you do it on your wallhanging or project.

Lesson 2 - 3-D Leaves:
Not limited to just leaves: Think flowers, butterflies, dragonflies, and more!

2 and 3-D Leaves

Same technique, just a different shape. We've included a lot of wonderful project ideas with this technique. It's fast and fun, and oh so pretty!
  • Tracing patterns perfectly
  • Printing the patterns on a water soluble stabilizer for a fast, no-trace pattern
  • Mimic some of the pretty computerized embroidery designs you have seen
  • Removing the stabilizer magically
  • Lots of ideas on how to use the 3-D designs and where
  • And much, much more!

Lesson 3 - Print Embellishing - Beyond the Basics
Eric will take you on a magic carpet ride for one of his favorite free-motion stitching techniques - Print Embellishing, showing lots of ideas on how and why and where to use this. You will be "sew" inspired, we promise!

Print Embellishing

Of course, you will be using your own print of choice, but the techniques can be the same.
  • Letting the fabric "talk to you"
  • Thread types and why each is chosen
  • Needle choices for each
  • Invisible Thread in the bobbin option
  • Getting the perfect top and bobbin tension
  • Sulky Holoshimmer™ Metallic Thread - dazzling! Using lighter weight threads for a specific look and feel
  • To hoop or not to hoop? And why.
  • Managing the bulk when doing free-motion work
  • Tips for Success with Sulky Metallic Threads Using a needle/thread lubricant - when and why
  • And much, much more!

Lesson 4 - Thread Painting - The basics and the Fabulous Fleur de Lis
All done with just a relaxing, slow-moving, straight stitch, Eric makes it look easy, because it is. His insights will help you learn a technique you've always wanted to do, but thought it required great talent. It does not - just patience and practice (like most things in life).

Thread Painting

Eric shows that using a proper hoop, and good hooping technique, gives you great control and freedom to make an art piece that is personal and meaningful, and that comes from your heart.
  • We provide the pattern to you, of course, but there are a million free patterns on the internet to do use for this fill technique, too. You'll see patterns everywhere you look.
  • Transferring the pattern(s) to your stabilizer or fabric:
Two different techniques: Printed pattern and tracing
  • Which stabilizers work best for this
  • Choosing the thread weight for the end project
  • Choosing a cut-away stabilizer and/or water soluble
  • Removing the stabilizer magically
  • And much, much more!

Lesson 5 - Ash Tree Wall Hanging
Through our partnership with Frond Design Studios, we are bringing you an absolutely stunning wallhanging. Frond has provided the pattern, we've added a Tip Sheet on how we quilted it and what we used for that. We also show you how to do perfect, easy turned appliqué, which is optional, but amazing.

Ash Tree Wall Hanging

Eric steps out the project for you. You can make the entire six-block wallhanging with a kit (available at www.sulky.com). Or, make pillows or individual blocks as wallhangings or table toppers. The magnificent Frond fabrics just beg for print embellishing and beautiful quilting. They are the kind of fabrics that are indeed hard to cut up.

Eric will walk you through:
  • Cutting and piecing
  • Fussy cutting the fabrics
  • Optional turned appliqué
  • Raw edge appliqué
  • Magnificent quilting ideas using some of the techniques you just learned

Lesson 6: BONUS TRUNK SHOW
See lots of samples of Eric's magnificent work, as well as other examples of free-motion stitching using the techniques that Eric will teach you. You will be so excited and motivated!

BONUS TRUNK SHOW

Lesson 7: BONUS MAGICAL QUILT BINDING by Ellen Osten, Director of Education for Sulky. The perfect no-show-seams binding every time!

Stress-Free, Fun, and Techniques-by-the-Ton

Inspiring! Mesmerizing! Captivating! Entertaining!

These are a few of the words that thousands of Eric's students all over the country use to describe his teaching style. Eric loves life and he loves to teach and share his exuberance for all things Free-Motion. He is passionate about inspiring students of all ages so they can discover and enjoy a lifetime of creative fun. Eric learned this technique from Joyce Drexler (co-founder and Creative Director of Sulky) when he was just 10 years old!

In addition to all the fabulous free-motion techniques, included are instructions for a beautiful completed Ash Tree Wallhanging from the Frond Fabric Collection (and there is a kit is available for purchase if you want at www.sulky.com). You'll be reminded how to make a quilt sandwich and finish and bind the quilt with the Sulky Magical Quilt Binding technique, too. (A separate bonus video included.)
