Laundering
- Q: I know I can't bleach Sulky rayon threads, but can I use the "color-safe" bleaches?
- A: "Color-safe" bleaches contain optical brighteners that can cause bleeding of the rayon thread colors. With Sulky Rayon Thread we do not recommend using detergents that contain additives like optical brighteners, or bleaching agents such as chlorine, peroxide or sodium carbonate. You can, however, bleach the new Sulky Poly Deco polyester thread.
- Q: How should I launder Sulky threads?
- A: The care instructions on our "real" thread color chart are as follows:
- All colors of Sulky are wash, boil and light fast and can be dry-cleaned. For best results, however, we recommend the following care be taken:
- Washing:
All embroidered articles should be washed with mild laundering agents. If washed by hand, ample water should be used to allow the goods to move freely. If necessary, Sulky can also be washed with heavy duty detergents. However, some of these detergents may contain optical brighteners that can cause discoloration. Therefore, you should prefer heavy duty detergents that have no additives of bleaching agents such as chlorine, peroxide, or sodium carbonate. It is most important to thoroughly rinse the embroidery before wringing or dry spinning. Embroidered clothing should never be left lying in a damp or wet pile. Both of the above apply in particular to embroidered items that are washed for the first time.
- Dry-Cleaning and Stain Removing:
Sulky may be dry-cleaned.
Stain removers must not contain any bleaching agents or color removers if they come into direct contact with the embroidery. It is necessary to rinse the embroidery after stain removing.
- Ironing: All embroidered items should be ironed on the reverse side or between two pieces of cloth. (This is a particularly safe procedure with metallic threads.)
- Drying; Tumble dry on low setting.
- Q: Is there a thread that can be bleached?
- A: Since there is a demand for decorative thread to use on children's clothing that may need to be bleached, we have brought out a line of polyester thread, Sulky Poly Deco, which is also a 40 weight thread, but it is colorfast and, therefore, can be bleached. It does handle a little differently because it stretches more and is a lot stronger, so a lower top tension will probably be necessary. It comes in 130 Sulky colors (all of these colors are already available in the Sulky rayon), as well as eight new neons. If you cannot find it locally because it is so new, you can order it from a mail-order source. (See the Mail Order Section of our website.) The raw goods for polyester are cheaper to produce so it is less expensive than rayon thread.
- Q: Okay, I didn't know about the laundering cautions, and my thread "bled" onto my garment. What do I do now?
- A: I discovered that a laundry stain removal product called "Shout", which is available in most grocery and discount stores, works great for this. It comes in stick and spray form. I prefer the stick form because it allows me to put it on as heavily as I need to in a specific area. You may need to apply this product and launder more than once.
